Avian flu: FOEN approves GMO vaccine

While the world is focused on the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, another virus is currently spreading across Europe, hitting the poultry industry hard. Hundreds of thousands of animals have already had to be killed this winter to contain the avian flu.

On 18 April 2023, the Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN) approved a release trial by the Institute of Virology and Immunology (IVI) using a genetically modified vaccine against avian flu.

The IVI, as the permit holder, must take measures during the trials at Tierpark Bern and Zoo Basel to guarantee the safety of humans, animals, and the environment.

On 2 November 2022, the IVI submitted an application to the FOEN for the experimental release of a genetically modified vaccine against avian flu. The aim of the trial is to test the efficacy of the vaccine against avian flu viruses. In addition, any side effects of the vaccination as well as safety for humans, animals, and the environment are to be investigated. To this end, the IVI will administer the vaccine to birds kept at Tierpark Bern and Zoo Basel between 2023 and 2026.

The FOEN is responsible for approving trials involving genetically modified veterinary medicinal products that are to be examined in the environment prior to possible market authorisation. The vaccination and follow-up examinations additionally require an animal experimentation permit, which is issued by the canton.
