40% of bird species threatened with extinction
The proportion of endangered bird species in Switzerland is three times higher than the global average.
40% of native bird species are threatened with extinction and a further fifth is on the early warning list. According to BirdLife, there is a biodiversity crisis.
Swiss birds on the global Red List
Worldwide, 12% of all bird species are threatened with extinction, the conservation organisation BirdLife reported. Swiss birds are also represented on the list of all globally threatened species compiled by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Three bird species from this global Red List and five species from the global early warning list are also regular breeding birds in Switzerland.
A direct comparison of the figures for nationally and globally endangered species is only possible to a limited extent. However, the large differences regarding birds and the particularly high proportion of endangered species in Switzerland provide indications of the alarming situation of native biodiversity, it was stated in the press release.
Lagging behind on protected areas
According to environmentalists, Switzerland also lags behind the rest of Europe in the designation of protected areas for biodiversity.
