Afghanistan: Extreme Cold Kills 77,000 Livestock
In Afghanistan, temperatures dropped to minus 28 degrees. 77,000 livestock froze to death. Conditions could deteriorate further.
Minus 28 Degrees Celsius
At the end of last week, temperatures dropped to as low as minus 28 degrees Celsius, and there are fears that conditions could become even colder.
A report states that the cold has led to the tragic death of approximately 77’000 animals, making it more difficult for people to recover from the famine in the country.
According to a recent report by CNN, 78 people are said to have fallen victim to the cold weather. The death of livestock could be problematic for many families who depend on food supplies.
Drought conditions and climate change
In addition to the cold, climate change also played an important role in Afghanistan, bringing the country a prolonged drought. The main food source consists of local crops. Famine is today one of the greatest problems in this country.
Just under four weeks ago, the radical Islamists banned women from being employed by aid organisations. “The economic situation is difficult. There is simply not enough aid,” said Rina Mattinson of the German Welthungerhilfe.
The threat to livestock endangers 21 million Afghans who depend on food on agricultural products.
