1,428 Dolphins Brutally Slaughtered in the Faroe Islands

"Given the times we are living in, with a global pandemic and a world coming to a standstill, it is absolutely horrifying to witness an assault on nature of this magnitude in the Faroe Islands," said Captain Alex Cornelissen, Sea Shepherd Global CEO. "If we have learned anything from this pandemic, it is that we must live in harmony with nature rather than eradicate it."

More than 1,400 dolphins were killed in a single day on the evening of Saturday, 12 September 2021, off the coast of the Faroe Islands as part of the traditional Danish Grindadráp hunt.

Largest Single Hunt Ever Recorded

Sea Shepherd stated that the slaughter of 1,428 Atlantic white-sided dolphins is considered the largest single hunt of these animals ever recorded worldwide.

«A superpod of 1,428 Atlantic white-sided dolphins was driven for hours over approximately 45 km by speedboats and jet skis into the shallow waters at the beach of Skálabotnur on the Danish Faroe Islands, where every single one of them was killed», it was reported.

According to Sea Shepherd, not every person who killed the whales had been trained to kill them quickly. «Many of the dolphins were still alive and moving after being thrown ashore alongside the rest of their dead pod», the organisation stated.

PETA Calls for Boycott

The Faroe Islands are an autonomous archipelago that is not part of the European Union but belongs to the Danish Crown. No ban on the massacre — marketed as tradition — is in sight in the Faroe Islands, despite the fact that they belong to Denmark, a member state of the European Union, which is itself prohibited from killing whales.

PETA is calling for a boycott and urging every individual to avoid the Faroe Islands and Denmark as well as products made by these countries. The animal rights organization also renewed its appeal to Faroese Fisheries Minister Jacob Vestergaard to immediately put an end to the bloody whale and dolphin hunt marketed as an alleged tradition.
