WWF Report 2024: Understanding Species Extinction and Climate Change

The latest WWF Report raises alarming questions about the state of our planet.

Editorial Team Wild beim Wild — 10 October 2024

Under the title «We are destroying what keeps us alive» the authors offer a profound insight into the impact of human activity on the environment and biodiversity.

The report makes clear that the current economic system and our lifestyle are not sustainable, and shows how these factors are leading to a dramatic decline in biodiversity.

Key Points of the Report

  1. Species Extinction: The report documents that habitat loss, overexploitation of resources and climate change threaten millions of animal and plant species every year. Wildlife populations are declining dramatically worldwide. Over the past 50 years, the vertebrate populations studied — mammals, amphibians, reptiles and birds — have declined by an average of 73% due to human activity. The loss of biological diversity has not only ecological, but also social and economic consequences.
  2. Resource Use: The excessive use of natural resources is a central theme. The WWF makes clear that our current resource consumption far exceeds planetary boundaries. This overexploitation causes irreversible damage to ecosystems that are essential for our survival. Freshwater ecosystems recorded the steepest decline at 85%. Geographically, Latin America and the Caribbean are most severely affected at 95%, followed by Africa at 76% and the Asia-Pacific region at 60%. So-called tipping points are at risk of being crossed — which would trigger irreversible changes.
  3. Climate Change: The impacts of climate change are also discussed in detail in the report. The rise in global temperatures affects not only the weather, but also has severe consequences for the habitats of many species. The WWF urgently calls for measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The greatest driver of species extinction, it states, is the destruction of animal and plant habitats by humans. «We are destroying what keeps us alive», said Kathrin Samson, Director of Nature Conservation at WWF Germany. Our health, food supply, access to clean water, economic stability, and bearable temperatures all depend on intact ecosystems and healthy wildlife populations. «What we need for a good and secure life is being put at risk by our way of living.»

A Call to Action

The WWF report ends with an urgent appeal to governments, businesses, and individuals: we must fundamentally change our way of life. Sustainability should be at the heart of all political and economic decisions. Every individual is called upon to contribute, whether through more conscious consumption or through active engagement in the protection of nature and the environment.

This report is a wake-up call. The overwhelming information and data show that we are well on our way to destroying the foundations of our existence. It is up to us to reverse this trend and protect the nature that makes life possible for all of us.

At three major world conferences coming up in the near future – in Colombia on biodiversity, in Azerbaijan on climate, and in South Korea on plastic waste – urgent progress must be made.
