A major oil spill off the California coast has killed fish, birds coated in oil, and destroyed wetlands.

477,000 litres of oil in the Pacific

An estimated 477,000 litres covered a section of the Pacific Ocean.

«“We have started finding dead birds and fish on the beach”, said Katrina Foley, the supervisor responsible for Orange County.

Environmental disaster at Huntington Beach

Kim Carr, the mayor of Huntington Beach, described the oil slick as an “environmental disaster” and “potential ecological catastrophe». «“Our wetlands are being damaged, and parts of our coastline are now covered in oil”, she said.

Cottie Petrie-Norris, a member of the California State Assembly, told CNN that the oil slick was a “call to action that we must stop drilling off our precious California coastline.»

«This is just the latest tragedy of the oil industry. It is long past time to prevent future oil spills by permanently protecting our coasts from offshore drilling”, said Jacqueline Savitz, Oceana’s Chief Policy Officer.
