Trophy Hunting: Resistance from Africa
Over 90 wildlife and nature conservation organisations and experts from Africa and around the world are protesting against trophy hunting trip offerings at the hunting trade fair in Dortmund.
On the occasion of Europe's largest hunting trade fair taking place in Dortmund from 24–29 January, over 90 wildlife and nature conservation organisations from Africa as well as experts from around the world are calling on the city of Dortmund in an open letter to put a stop to the marketing and sale of trophy hunting trips.
«Our goal is to convey a truly African perspective, including the widespread opposition to the colonially-shaped commercialisation of our threatened and protected species,» said the letter's initiator, Stefania Falcon of Wild Animal Protection Forum South Africa (WAPFSA).
Letter decries entrenchment of colonial structures
Trophy hunting has devastating consequences for Africa's unique wildlife, but the economic and social repercussions are equally grim. The signatories emphasise that the proclaimed economic benefits of trophy hunting for local communities are vastly exaggerated.
«Africans have a deep aversion to the neo-colonial character of trophy hunting,» the letter states. Trophy hunting enables wealthy Western elites privileged access to wild animals, while local populations are themselves prohibited from subsistence hunting.
Trophy hunting impedes sustainable development
«We see no benefit in the continuation of this abhorrent sport,» emphasises Stefania Falcon. In place of trophy hunting, there are alternative projects in various African countries that secure the livelihoods of local communities while simultaneously preserving ecosystems.
Wildlife worth more alive than dead
Various studies show that wildlife generates significantly more revenue for tourism alive than dead. «Trophy hunting is a lose-lose situation for wildlife and people,» the letter states.
