Animal Rights vs. Animal Welfare: There Is a Difference

Animal rights and animal welfare are not the same thing. The difference is fundamental to understanding the ethical treatment of animals.

Editorial Wild beim Wild — 8 November 2022

You have probably heard the terms animal rights and animal welfare before — probably used synonymously.

But is there a difference? Although both advocate for animals, the ultimate goals are very different and should not be used in place of one another.

Animal welfare supports the keeping of animals

Animal welfare advocates for the “practical and legal concept of animal ownership.” In short, animal welfare supports the ownership of animals and places value on high-quality animal care, acknowledging the bond between humans and animals. It is the hope of protecting animals and advocating for the highest possible quality of life.

The standards in Switzerland are based on the Animal Welfare Act of 1978, which states, among other things: “No one may unjustifiably cause an animal pain, suffering, or harm, or place it in a state of fear.” The animal rights debate in Switzerland is also guided by these principles.

Animal rights go a few steps further

According to the American Kennel Club, animal rights is the belief that humans should not use or own animals at all. Animal rights groups and activists believe that sentient animals have the same moral value as humans. Therefore, animal rights aim not only to improve the quality of life for animals, but also to completely abolish breeding, agriculture, and human interaction.

Why the difference matters

Animal rights is generally referred to as a movement with a range of approaches. The animal rights movement may also be described as animal liberation, animal personhood, or animal advocacy. All of them, however, strive to end the use and ownership of animals, typically focusing on the food, research, clothing, hunting, and entertainment industries.

Animal rights activism is known for being consistent. Those who advocate for the protection of wildlife should know and understand both perspectives.
