Groningen bans all forms of hobby hunting
Groningen is the northeasternmost province of the Netherlands. It borders East Frisia and the Emsland region to the east. To the north lies the North Sea. Neighbouring provinces are Drenthe and Friesland. The capital is Groningen.
Hobby hunting banned on municipal land
Alderperson Kirsten de Wrede (Party for the Animals) has banned the shooting of animals on properties owned by the municipality. Hobby hunting for pleasure was already banned; now “hunting for management and damage limitation” has been added to the prohibition.
“We see animals as co-inhabitants of our planet and therefore want to treat them better,” says the city councillor. “Animals are not only shot dead, but also wounded. Many geese can no longer make their winter migration because they are too badly injured.”

Scaring animals away instead of killing them
Farmers can contact the municipality to claim compensation for damages. “There are several things a farmer can do to prevent damage. Animals can be scared away, for example,” says De Wrede. Hobby hunting fails as a means of population control. More on the topic of the Geneva model and hunting legislation.
