Vegan Society Switzerland dissolved
The Vegan Society Switzerland was an organisation that advocated for the vegan lifestyle and sought to raise awareness of the benefits of a plant-based diet.
In recent years, however, there was considerable change within the organisation, which ultimately led to its dissolution.
After 15 years, the Vegan Society Switzerland dissolved in May 2025, primarily for financial reasons.
Like many non-profit organisations, the Vegan Society Switzerland struggled with financial challenges. Donations and membership fees were often insufficient to cover ongoing costs. The need to raise funds for events, campaigns and administrative costs placed increasing pressure on the organisation and contributed to internal discord. The organisation was no longer able to cover its expenditures through income, as revenues and expenses continued to diverge. Despite a variety of projects and adjustments, stable, long-term funding was no longer realistic, according to an interview with Rafi Neuburger.
The association had grown and become more professional in recent years, yet the organisational challenges and the limited reach within small Switzerland led to its withdrawal. In Switzerland, the vegan movement has changed significantly in recent years. With the emergence of new organisations and initiatives pursuing similar goals, the Vegan Society found it difficult to maintain its relevance and visibility within the community. Many activists and interested individuals joined new groups that pursued more specific approaches and offered a broader range of activities.
Rafi Neuburger emphasises that the vegan lifestyle is better known today, but that much more work is needed to establish it more broadly and to further reduce the consumption of animal products. He remains optimistic about the future, even as the organization now comes to an end, and wishes to continue personally advocating for animal protection and sustainable consumption. In closing, he thanks all supporters for the time shared together and their commitment to a better world.
Numerous members of the vegan society have decided to redirect their activities toward personal projects or smaller, locally oriented initiatives. This trend toward more individualized approaches to promoting the vegan lifestyle reflects a growing interest in local engagement and personal influence.
The dissolution of the vegan society Switzerland is an example of the challenges faced by non-profit organizations. Internal differences, financial constraints, a changing environment, and the trend toward personal initiatives are causing decades-old organizations that once played a central role in the movement to cease to exist. The future of the vegan movement in Switzerland nevertheless remains vibrant, as many dedicated individuals continue to advocate for a plant-based diet and animal welfare.
