Snakes perceive more than previously thought
Because snakes have no externally visible ears, the prejudice that these animals are deaf is widespread. However, according to a study, this is incorrect.
Not only ground vibrations
Snakes are anything but deaf, even without visible ears. A study in PLOS One shows that these animals perceive not only the tiniest vibrations through the ground, but also airborne sound.
Reaction depends on genus
Australian researchers examined 19 captive-born animals from six different species. While the Woma python moved towards the sound, the smaller venomous snakes tended to move away from it. More on the topic of wildlife and studies.
