Over 3400 protected baby turtles rescued from illegal trade in Mexico
Mexican authorities have rescued over 3400 protected baby turtles from wildlife smugglers.
During an inspection in the state of Chiapas, the animals were discovered in overcrowded crates, and the driver was arrested for illegal wildlife trafficking.
The juvenile animals belong to the Mesoamerican turtle species, which is protected in Mexico and other countries.
They were transported without the required documents, in violation of environmental laws.
The turtles are now in a specialised facility that will decide whether they can be released back into the wild.
