New Wild Boar Enclosure at the Natur- und Tierpark Goldau

On April 9, the groundbreaking ceremony for the new wild boar enclosure at the Natur- und Tierpark Goldau took place. This marks the beginning of a construction project that will offer the park's wild boars more natural habitat, provide visitors with fascinating insights into the world of this important species, and illustrate the coexistence between humans and animals.

For 30 years, the former wild boar enclosure was a central feature of the Natur- und Tierpark Goldau.

The floor of the old enclosure was sealed with concrete, leaving no natural vegetation and very few natural retreats for the wild boars. As it no longer met current standards for species-appropriate wildlife husbandry, it is now being replaced by a new structure: the new wild boar enclosure, measuring 1,300 m², is being built between the bearded vulture aviary and the entrance to the free-range zone. Construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2025, allowing the wild boars to move into their new home at the start of 2026. For the groundbreaking ceremony on April 9, Katrina Wenger, Director of the Natur- und Tierpark Goldau, and the park's management team invited numerous guests.

The new enclosure brings significant advantages. The habitat for the wild boars will be doubled and integrated into the existing landslide landscape, considerably improving animal welfare. “The enclosure offers the animals a near-natural environment with a forest floor, retreats, and ample space for rooting and digging — this encourages the natural behavior of wild boars,” explained Dr. Pascal Marty, curator of the Natur- und Tierpark Goldau, in his address.

More Space, More Nature, More Knowledge

The facility is also an enrichment for visitors: they have the opportunity to get to know the animals better through interactive information offerings. Guided tours, feeding sessions, display objects and signage provide fascinating insights into the lives of these shy yet so important forest dwellers. In addition, a maize field will be established at the facility, serving as an illustrative example of the challenges of coexistence between wild boars and agriculture, as well as possible approaches to a harmonious relationship between humans and animals.

Furthermore, the new facility actively contributes to environmental protection. “With the new wild boar facility, we are creating near-natural habitats: the areas are unsealed and provide space for natural vegetation. At the same time, modern systems ensure that nutrients from feed and excretions are retained – thus keeping the ecosystem of the nearby Blauweiher protected as well,” explains Joe Michel, Head of Construction and Infrastructure at the Natur- und Tierpark Goldau, in a press release dated 10 April 2025.
