Lynx in the Bernese Oberland approved for shooting
A lynx in the Bernese Oberland has been approved for shooting. Animal welfare organisations criticise the measure as disproportionate.
A lynx is said to have killed more than 15 livestock animals in the Bernese Oberland over the past twelve months.
The shooting permit for the animal has now been issued.
The canton of Bern has granted a permit to shoot a lynx in the Bernese Oberland. The animal is said to have killed more than 15 livestock animals over the past twelve months, despite protective measures being in place.
Based on the “unusual kill pattern”, trail camera images, and a transmitter, the authorities say the incidents could be clearly attributed to the lynx.
The shooting may only be carried out by cantonal game wardens, as the canton of Bern announced on Monday. They are now permitted to target the lynx until 19 July.
The shooting permit applies to the area covering the municipalities of Wilderswil, Saxeten, Därligen, Leissigen, and Krattigen. It also applies in Aeschi bei Spiez, Reichenbach im Kandertal, and Frutigen. However, the animal may not be hunted within the federal wildlife sanctuary of Kiental.
