Wolf M169 identified from Ticino
The wildlife wardens collected DNA samples on site and submitted them for individual identification. The genetically confirmed wolf M169 originates from Italy and was also genetically detected on 20 February in the Valle Maggia in Ticino.
This shows that there is currently a great deal of dynamics across the Alps in the wolf population. Wolves travel very long distances. The fact that two killed hinds have already been found indicates that the wolf is taking its natural place in the ecosystem and exerting its influence on wild-living even-toed ungulates.
To what extent the presence of wolves will shape the development of red deer populations remains to be seen.
