Citizen platform exposes illegal hunting practices

Hobby hunting must be strictly regulated to protect safety and biodiversity.

Editorial Wild beim Wild — 18 October 2025

Nevertheless, violations are mounting. The platform balancetonchasseur.fr allows citizens in France to anonymously report illegal or dangerous hunting activities.

Hobby hunting is under pressure – rightly so

Hobby hunting is often portrayed as a necessary instrument of wildlife management. Yet incidents across Europe repeatedly demonstrate that the term “sustainable hunting” can also conceal dangerous or illegal practices. While the law draws clear boundaries, these are regularly crossed – with fatal consequences for people, animals and the environment.

Gunshots in residential areas, killed pets, illegal trapping, hunting of protected species – numerous abuses occur every year. Many of these cases go undetected or unprosecuted because witnesses have no safe way to report them.

A tool for citizens

In France, the independent citizen platform balancetonchasseur.fr offers an innovative solution modelled on «The Great Hobby Hunter Radar» by IG Wild beim Wild: here, people can report dangerous or illegal hunting activities anonymously and safely.

Each report is reviewed by the association À Base de Plantes and can, if necessary, be forwarded to the relevant authorities such as the Gendarmerie, the Police or the Office Français de la Biodiversité (OFB).
The aim is to document hunting-related grievances and to safeguard public safety as well as the protection of biodiversity.

Safety and responsibility at the forefront

The platform sees itself as a civic and ethical instrument – not a stage for incitement or personal attacks. Only observed, verifiable facts may be reported. Defamatory or discriminatory content is expressly prohibited.

All submitted data is processed in compliance with GDPR regulations, stored for a maximum of twelve months and subsequently deleted. Those affected may request the deletion of their data at any time.

In this way, balancetonchasseur.fr sets an important standard: transparency, data protection and accountability – values that are all too often neglected in the debate on hunting.

Why oversight is necessary

Hunting touches on central societal questions: safety, animal ethics, biodiversity. When hobby hunters use their weapons irresponsibly, a traditional craft becomes a safety risk. Citizens not infrequently report dangerous shots fired near homes, footpaths or fields. Cases of violence, threats and intimidation directed at critics are also on the rise.

Such incidents undermine public trust in hunting and endanger the fragile balance between humans and nature.

Civic courage protects lives and biodiversity

The ability to report misconduct is an important step towards greater transparency. Platforms such as balancetonchasseur.fr give citizens a voice – and make visible what is too often kept hidden.

Recreational hunting must not be a law-free zone. Only through clear rules, independent oversight and the courage to come forward can we ensure that nature, animals – and ultimately people too – remain protected.

Recreational hunting must also adhere strictly to laws and ethical principles. Those who witness violations should not remain silent. Because every report helps to stop dangerous practices and preserve biodiversity.

Let us care for nature – vigilantly, courageously and in solidarity.
