Federal Council Plans Import Ban on Fur Produced by Animal Cruelty
The import and trade of fur products involving animal cruelty are to be prohibited in Switzerland. The Federal Council wants to amend the Animal Protection Act.
Fur produced through animal cruelty is to be banned from import into Switzerland in the future.
This is what the Federal Council is proposing. It also intends to prohibit the domestic trade of fur products obtained through animal cruelty.
The federal government plans to amend the Animal Protection Act accordingly. It has submitted its draft for public consultation.
The consultation period runs until 22 November. Parliament is set to decide from summer 2025 onwards.
The Federal Council intends to present the legislative amendment as an indirect counter-proposal to the fur initiative. It has already decided to reject the initiative itself at an earlier stage.
Retailers Must Provide Proof of Origin
With the domestic trade ban, the counter-proposal goes further than the initiative itself, which only provides for an import ban, the Federal Council writes.
Swiss retailers and online providers will in future be required to verify the production method when purchasing fur products. They will also be required to provide proof that the fur was obtained without animal cruelty.
