Diversity of Swiss River Fish Documented
A large-scale survey in Swiss streams has recorded over 50 fish species. For the first time, several species were also identified among small fish.
A large-scale survey in Swiss streams has recorded over 50 fish species. More than 20’000 fish were caught and 12’000 DNA samples archived.
Only a few species in many streams
Only a few species were recorded in many stream sections, and at 158 locations even just one. “We should look for ways to better protect the few remaining near-natural habitats,” says project leader Jakob Brodersen from the water research institute Eawag.
What is not known disappears unnoticed
“If the diversity of nature is not documented and understood, we cannot protect it efficiently,” says Brodersen. The recently published Red List shows how much pressure trout species are under. More on the topic of Biodiversity, Environment and Nature Conservation and Species Protection.
