Recreational hunter (86) shoots at car with shotgun
In Ennenda (GL), a dispute between an 86-year-old man and a 32-year-old escalated over the weekend.
Dispute escalates at Glarus hunting cabin
According to the Glarus cantonal police, a verbal altercation between the two men had already occurred on Saturday, 4 October 2025.
On Sunday morning, the 32-year-old sought out his older adversary at the latter's hunting cabin. There, another verbal confrontation ensued. In the course of the dispute, the 86-year-old reached for a shotgun and demanded that the visitor leave the cabin. The 32-year-old complied with the demand and left in his car. Shortly thereafter, the elderly man fired two shots in the direction of the departing vehicle.
No injuries, shooter arrested
No one was injured, and no property damage occurred. The alerted Glarus cantonal police were able to apprehend the suspected shooter shortly afterwards near the hunting cabin.
The exact background of the dispute as well as the precise sequence of events are the subject of an ongoing investigation by the public prosecutor's office and the youth prosecutor's office of the Canton of Glarus and the cantonal police.
Medical assessments and age limits long overdue
According to IG Wild beim Wild, annual medical-psychological assessments are needed for recreational hunters modelled on the Dutch system, as well as an upper age limit. The largest age group among recreational hunters is 65+, those with age-related, cognitive, visual, concentration and reaction impairments as well as training and practice deficits. From the age of 45, the number of accidents involving people and animals rises dramatically. The alarming reports of hunting accidents and fatal crimes involving hunting weapons make it clear: it is high time to abolish recreational hunting! Lethal firearms must not be placed in the hands of uncontrolled recreational hunters!
Recreational hunters embody speciesism. Speciesism is comparable to racism and sexism, and that is neither a culture nor a tradition.
Particularly in the case of recreational hunting it is essential to look very closely. Nowhere else is there so much manipulation through falsehoods and fake news. Violence and lies are two sides of the same coin.
