Roe deer disappearing from Denmark
The number of roe deer in Denmark is continuously declining. Not so in northern Germany.
A strange phenomenon is spreading in Denmark: there are fewer and fewer roe deer. Since 2011, hobby hunters have been able to shoot fewer and fewer roe deer. The weather, more foxes, or more deer do not appear to be the cause.
DCE rules out some causes
The National Centre for Environment and Energy suspects that the disappearance may be linked to an infectious disease, combined with a reduced capacity of ecosystems to sustain the animals.
Climate change increases parasite pressure
«Certainly, climate change also contributes its part,» says Dr. Armin Deutz. The reason: parasite pressure increases due to milder climates. Denmark is a country shaped by agriculture. Green spaces are frequently mown and treated with liquid manure. More on the topic of environment and nature conservation and biodiversity.
