Risk of Overheating in Vehicles

The Thurgau Cantonal Police warns against leaving children or animals in vehicles. Overheating poses a life-threatening danger!

Editorial Wild beim Wild — 9 June 2023

Deadly Trap: The Hot Car

Warm outdoor temperatures or intense sunlight can turn parked vehicles into deadly traps for children or animals, even with windows slightly open.

Therefore, never leave people or animals in a vehicle without ensuring adequate fresh air supply. Opening the windows a “crack” is not sufficient.

Children are unable to regulate the heat generated through sweating and breathing adequately. This creates a risk of overheating (hyperthermia) and even circulatory collapse. Like humans, dogs are also at risk. They regulate their body temperature through their tongue (panting) and paws. Insufficient ventilation and lack of water can lead to circulatory collapse.

How to respond correctly

Here is how to respond correctly when people or animals are trapped in a vehicle and endangered by heat:

  • Try to locate the driver, for example by having their license plate number announced at the shopping centre
  • If that is not possible, contact the police via the emergency number 117
  • Monitor the health condition of the person or animal until the police arrive
  • Document the situation using a camera and/or call on additional bystanders, in case it becomes necessary in an emergency to break a window

The table shows the heat build-up inside a vehicle parked in the sun with closed windows.

It is also important that animals have sufficient water and ventilation during journeys. Give your animal water regularly and open the windows when needed to ensure adequate air circulation in the car.

Make sure to take sufficient breaks during the journey so that your animal can be let out and stretch appropriately. More on the topic of Animal welfare.
