Children to hunt animals in New Zealand

Children in rural areas receive a reward of 250 dollars for killing feral cats.

250 dollars for the most dead cats

Hobby hunters aged 14 or younger have until the end of June to kill as many feral cats as possible. Whoever kills the most cats wins 250 dollars. It is estimated that there are 1.2 million domestic cats and more than twice as many feral cats in New Zealand.

Difference “practically impossible” to identify

Craig Gillies of the Department of Conservation confirmed that the visual difference between domestic and feral cats is “practically impossible” to identify. Whether the prey is “legitimate” is only known to the hunters once the animal is already dead. The campaign was cancelled following massive criticism, reports BBC.
