Biodiversity: Zurich Animal Protection Supports Initiative

From the very beginning, Zurich Animal Protection has supported the Biodiversity Initiative, which will now be put to a vote on 22 September.

The initiative concerns the foundations of life for us humans and, in particular, for our wildlife.

«If we do not want to endanger wildlife even further, a clear YES at the ballot box is needed — please help!», says Zurich Animal Protection.

Biodiversity refers first and foremost to the diversity of species — a diversity upon which our wildlife and plants depend in order to survive.

For it is only in a diverse natural environment that plants are reliably pollinated. Only in a species-rich environment do wild animals find sufficient food and are spared from suffering hunger.

Diversity of Habitats

Biodiversity also encompasses the diversity of habitats. The more varied an area is, the more niches it offers, and the more species settle within it. And the more likely animals are to find hiding places protected from predators, where they can sleep, overwinter, and raise their young.

Unfortunately, the state of biodiversity in Switzerland is poor. Many species and habitats are severely threatened. While efforts are being made to improve the situation and some individual species are indeed recovering,

overall, the trend continues steadily in the wrong direction. The current protective measures are far from sufficient.

The Biodiversity Initiative demands that the protection of animals, plants, and habitats be strengthened and enshrined in law.
