5’089 reported attacks in 49 years

Since 1970, reports of large predator attacks on humans have been increasing. According to a new study in PLoS Biology the frequency and background of these attacks depend on socioeconomic and environmental factors.

The experts identified 5’089 reported attacks by large predators, 32 percent of which were fatal. 90 percent of the attacks occurred in low-income countries.

Context crucial for prevention

In high-income countries, most attacks occurred during recreational activities such as hiking or camping. Wild big cats and canine predators were responsible for more attacks, while bears were more likely to attack when surprised.

«Measures to reduce attacks by predators must take into account the various local ecological and social contexts,» says Penteriani. In low-income countries, protected areas should be expanded and people and livestock should be separated from the habitats of predators. More on the topic of wildlife and studies.
