Evidence of Brown Bear in Bavaria
Track prints of a brown bear in the snow were documented in the border region of Bavaria and Austria. The last recorded sighting in Bavaria dated back several years.
Track prints in the snow confirmed
On 15 and 16 April 2023, track prints in the snow were documented in the Miesbach district and the Rosenheim district in the border region with Austria. A brown bear was confirmed. The nearest bear population is located in the Italian Trentino, approximately 120 km from Bavaria.
Sightings since 2019
After 2006, a bear was recorded in Bavaria for the first time again in 2019. Young males sometimes roam very far in search of a female. The Bavarian State Office for the Environment provides guidelines on how to behave. More on the topic of species protection and wildlife.
