Vegan TV Spot Warns of the Climate Crisis

A new vegan TV spot warns parents against feeding their children animal products, thereby making them “the last of us.”

The PETA commercial is based on the HBO hit series “The Last of Us,” whose season finale airs this Sunday (12 March). The drama, starring vegan actress Bella Ramsey in the lead role, is set in a world where humans have been largely wiped out by a fungal infection.

The theme of the vegan TV spot is the fact that animal agriculture is a primary driver of the climate crisis.The spot opens with a close-up of a young girl sitting in a café in a post-apocalyptic world. Meanwhile, the words “Are you a bad parent?” appear on screen.

The child lists some rules her mother has imposed on her, such as not touching the stove or talking to strangers. “You said it was your job to protect me,” she says. “You always told me what not to do … But you never said: don’t eat meat or dairy. And now look at what you’ve done.”

At the end of the spot, the words appear: “Animal agriculture is killing the planet. Do better. Feed them vegan.”

Animal Agriculture as a Climate Driver

PETA confirmed that the commercial will air during a series of apocalyptic television programmes and films in the United States.

Animal agriculture is one of the primary causes of the climate crisis. Yet it is frequently excluded from environmental discussions.

According to the United Nations, approximately one third of all human-caused greenhouse gas emissions are linked to food production, with the largest share of these gases originating from the meat and dairy industry.Vegan foods such as fruits and vegetables, whole grains, beans, peas, nuts, and lentils require less energy, land, and water, and the shift to plant-based nutrition can help the world avoid the worst impacts of the climate catastrophe.

Plant-based diet as a solution

Various studies suggest that a global shift toward a more plant-based diet is essential to avoid a climate breakdown.

PETA Vice President Tracy Reiman commented in a statement on the vegan TV spot. “The horrors depicted in The Last of Us are imaginary, but as Greta Thunberg has made clear, children will face a truly terrible future if we continue pumping greenhouse gases from meat and dairy production into the atmosphere,” said Reiman.

“No parent wants to condemn their children to an inhospitable planet, which is why PETA is urging them to raise them vegan before it is too late.”
