Hybrid Cats
The Swiss Animal Protection STS advises against keeping hybrid cats and calls for stricter regulations on breeding and keeping.
The trade in hybrid cats, crosses between domestic and wild cats, is booming due to their exotic appearance. However, keeping them quickly overwhelms many cat owners.
Bengal cats most common
In Switzerland approximately 12’500 registered Bengal cats live. Over the past four years, their population has doubled.
STS opposes keeping them
The Swiss Animal Protection STS opposes keeping hybrid cats. Stricter regulations on breeding and keeping are needed. In Switzerland, mating a domestic cat with a wild cat is prohibited.
Bengal cats in animal shelters
Animal shelters in particular are noting an increase in surrendered hybrid cats. The most common reasons: lack of cleanliness, aggression towards conspecifics, and owners being overwhelmed. More on the topic Wildlife.
