Elevated Hide in Austria: A Dispute Over Height and View

A lofty throne for hobby hunters: It stands 6 storeys and nearly 30 metres tall, towering over the Koralpe in Styria. It may well be the tallest in all of Austria.

Drone footage suggests that the panoramic view from the nearly 30-metre-high tower is breathtaking.

The elevated hide of a hobby hunter on the Koralm in Bad Schwanberg is hard to miss.

Measure requiring neither permit nor notification

The construction of an elevated hide in Austria is an extremely unbureaucratic undertaking. Hobby hunters regard it as a “building measure requiring neither a permit nor notification.”

This means that an elevated hide in a hunting territory can allegedly be erected with little oversight or outside interference. In theory, the hobby hunter need only observe a few formalities, such as the required distance from a neighbouring territory and the correct condition of the hide.

The authorities are now examining whether this is permitted. The visual disfigurement of the natural landscape by these hobby hunters is striking. More on the psychology of hobby hunting and its effects on nature.
