Climate activist Greta Thunberg appeared in court on Monday, 24 July 2023, for failing to obey police at a demonstration in southern Sweden the previous month.

As local newspaper Sydsvenskan reports, Thunberg and other activists were arrested after blocking traffic at the oil terminal of the port of Malmö on 19 June.

Charged with contempt

Thunberg was charged because she refused to comply with police orders to leave the site of the protest, according to Swedish prosecutor spokeswoman Annika Collin in a statement from prosecutors.

Prosecutor Charlotte Ottosen told the newspaper that the offence of contempt is normally punished with fines.

Thunberg inspired a global youth movement calling for stronger action to combat climate change after staging weekly protests outside the Swedish parliament from 2018.

She told Swedish media that she will not appeal the verdict.

The 20-year-old avoided a possible prison sentence and was ordered to pay a fine. According to Swedish media reports, the fine is calculated on the basis of her income.

Greta had pleaded not guilty and told the court: “My actions are justifiable,” according to the newspaper Sydsvenskan. More on the topic Environment and nature conservation.
