The Beaver as a Promoter of Biodiversity
In recent years, more and more beavers have been observed in and along Swiss waterways. The spread of the beaver population to smaller waterways, among other things, is increasingly affecting agriculture directly.
Exterminated and reintroduced
At the beginning of the 19th century, the beaver was Switzerland exterminated. In the 1950s it was reintroduced. In 2019, info fauna estimated the beaver population at around 3’500 animals.
Biodiversity promoter
The beaver shapes its habitat like no other animal. By building its dams, it contributes to the promotion of biodiversity. According to the FOEN, the goal must be for the beaver to be perceived as a normal part of our landscape.
Finding coexistence
