March 29, a day to end fishing
March 29 is World Day for the End of Fishing, which calls for consideration of the interests of aquatic animals (fish, crustaceans, cephalopods...).
They are sensitive and intelligent beings: among other things, salmon can remember a route of several thousand kilometers despite having traveled it only once, and crabs actively avoid pain beyond simple avoidance reflexes.
Every day around the world, more than three billion aquatic animals are killed by fishing boats and aquaculture farms. Their agony, which can last up to four hours on fishing boats if they are not eviscerated alive, causes immense suffering.
Precisely because aquatic animals know what is happening to them, we must consider their interest in not suffering. The scientific consensus is clear: We have no necessity to eat them, and therefore no necessity to breed or kill them.
Since 2017, organizations worldwide have mobilized every year to demand the closure of aquaculture farms and an end to the cruel and unnecessary practices of fishing. This year, the 160 associations supporting WEF are organizing street or online actions to raise awareness about the suffering of aquatic animals.
