Drivers Beware: Amphibian Migrations
Amphibians migrate to their spawning waters in mild weather, crossing roads in the process. Drivers should exercise particular caution.
In mild and humid weather conditions, amphibians soon set out by the thousands toward their spawning waters, crossing roadways and being killed in the process. The situation is particularly dramatic for the common toad.
Nocturnal Rescue Operation
To amphibians from road death, volunteers erect amphibian barriers every year at critical road sections in Switzerland. The STS sections alone that carry out annual rescue operations collect more than 20’000 animals each spring.
Avoid Known Routes
The Swiss animal protection organisation STS calls on all drivers to exercise great caution and drive at an appropriate speed at dusk and at night. More on the topic of wildlife and species protection.
